A Scheibenstutzen (often translated as a "target stutzer") from the 1908–1920 era is a custom, high-precision Swiss or German target rifle utilizing a dropping-block Martini action. Read more
Description
- The Action: It utilizes a Swiss-style Martini action (distinguished by a thinner profile and specialized internal layout compared to the bulky British military Martini-Henry). It is operated via an ornate lever under the stock that frequently doubles as a quasi-pistol grip or finger rest.
- The .22LR Conversion: These conversions were traditionally achieved by either re-barreling the action completely with a heavy rimfire barrel or by installing a high-quality inner barrel tube/liner inside an original large-bore barrel (such as a 10.4mm Vetterli or 7.5mm Swiss).
- The Rimfire Mechanics: Because the original action was meant for centerfire cartridges, the conversion required gunsmiths to either offset the firing pin to strike the rim of the cartridge or modify the breech block height. Specialized split-extractors or custom extractor bars were fitted to grab and fling the tiny .22LR rim.
- Target Furniture: True to the Schuetzen (or Scheiben) tradition, these feature heavy, often fluted octagonal barrels, massive target buttstocks with distinct cheek rests on both sides, a deep crescent buttplate, and an incredibly light double-set trigger system.
