On the Range: Monashee Outdoors Highlights Recent National Competitions

At Monashee Outdoors, our connection to shooting sports goes well beyond stocking shelves. We stay actively involved in the shooting community—both by stepping up to the line ourselves and by supporting local up-and-coming athletes as they compete across North America.

Recently, our team celebrated two major milestones on the competition circuit: co-owner Ryan’s performance at the 2026 IPSC Canada Nationals, and our sponsored high school rodeo athlete, Olivia's trip to the National Finals Rodeo in the United States.

What Is IPSC? Understanding Practical Shooting

The International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) is a world-renowned sport that tests a shooter’s balance of accuracy, power, and speed. Unlike stationary target shooting, IPSC courses are dynamic and varied. Shooters move through specialized obstacle courses (called stages), engaging targets from various distances and positions, managing movement and reloads under the clock.

Scoring is calculated using a "hit factor"—the total points scored divided by the time taken to complete the stage. This creates a realistic test of marksmanship, gun handling, and stage strategy.

This year marked the 50th Anniversary of IPSC in Canada, making the 2026 National Championship in Prince George, BC, a major milestone for Canadian competitive shooting.

The match drew 318 participants from across the country, bringing together top practical shooters for two days of intense competition spread across the week. Over the course of the event, competitors navigated technical stages featuring steel plates, moving targets, and tight penalty lines. Monashee Outdoors co-owner, Ryan, represented our team on the range, putting technical skill and equipment to the test in a demanding national field.

Supporting Youth Shooting Sports: From High School Rodeo to National Finals Rodeo

In addition to our adult competition involvement, Monashee Outdoors is proud to sponsor local youth competing in shooting disciplines.

Following a solid year of qualifying events, where she finished in 1st in all of BC,  our sponsored high school rodeo athlete, Olivia, earned a spot to compete at the National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) in the United States. Representing our store in the Light Rifle division, Olivia joined a massive international event featuring over 1,800 contestants from 6 countries.

Light rifle competition requires steady focus, consistency, and precise sight alignment across multiple firing positions (prone, kneeling, and standing). Competing alongside top young marksmen on such a broad stage caps off a great year of hard work and dedication.

Bringing Competition Experience Back to the Store

Whether it is dynamic practical pistol shooting or precision light rifle discipline, competing at the national level keeps our team grounded in the practical side of shooting sports. Testing gear under match conditions helps us better serve our local community with practical advice on gear setups, maintenance, optics, and range equipment.
