Design & Specifications

- Sights: Carbine ladder-style rear sight, often graduated up to 2,000 yards
- Hardware: Straight-grip stock, carbine-style buttplate with a sliding trapdoor for cleaning rods, and a distinctive saddle ringÂ
Historical Significance
- Military & Law Enforcement: Originally sought after for military trials, these carbines saw active service with U.S. officers during the Spanish-American War (famously used by Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders) and were widely adopted by the Texas and Arizona Rangers.
- Smokeless Powder: The Model 1895 was Winchester’s first lever-action to utilize a box magazine, which safely accommodated high-velocity smokeless powder and pointed Spitzer bullets without the risk of chain detonation in a tubular magazine.
